Art Education
My name is Miranda Mapula. I graduated with my B.F.A. in art studio and my Master's Degree (MAT) in art education from Coastal Carolina University. As an undergraduate I concentrated primarily in mixed-media sculpture and black and white film photography. Today, I continue to enjoy making art and I love trying out new and unique materials as I teach at Myrtle Beach Elementary! My artwork usually revolves around concepts of faith, activism, community, and/or personal issues that others may be able to relate to.
As an art educator, I believe art education is general education and can connect to any content area. Art lessons should be interdisciplinary- based and enriching to a school's curriculum development. Art has been used as an educational tool as long as people were able to draw on the walls of caves, and art today remains just as informative in the midst of a visually saturated society. Image literacy is essential to the lives of students today.
Art education is a tool that can help create and educate well-rounded citizens of a community, state, nation, and world. Art can be used as a means of expression, but beyond that a means of impact, propaganda, and promotion. Art can move people to act and become more aware of the other members of society around them. Beyond impact, citizenry is in direct need of creative people and problem solvers that are driven by the influence of art.
The art classroom should be a place of expression and self- exploration. It should be a place where creativity drives the discovery of our own unique identity.
