Memories Make Senses |
I have decided to work with the idea of memory. Memories are stored like library books and our minds trigger and select these books often based upon our sensory. For example, you smell fresh baked cookies and then your mind goes back to Christmas at home, baking cookies with your grandma. I am exploring this theme using various elements that engage the sensory. I do this by taking images of things that that would engage a strong use of sensory and therefore possibly provoke specific memories, which typically range from person to person, but can also be relevant and specific to a child who grew up in America. Memories aren't exactly clear in our mind, but are splotchy with various random details. Much of my inspiration for this project has derived from my perfume bottle collection. Within each bottle I Have saved some perfume fragrance I have worn in the past. When I go back and smell the perfume sometimes I can recall something specific, but sometimes I can’t even make out what I’m trying to remember, but rather just feel a certain emotion. I started collecting the bottles after I took an English class my freshman year at Coastal that revolved around the theme of memory and how it is triggered. Ever since then I have be mesmerized with how our memories work!

Many children in America recall the grand adventures to the mall!
The bright lights, smells, and colors are not easily forgotten. In this multiply
exposer digital piece, viewers can look at the vague details and recall their
trips to the mall when they were younger. I tried to encompass all senses in
this piece. If you look closely you may smell the perfume, taste the bubble gum,
see the fashioned mannequins, hear the children’s mechanical rides, or touch the
shiny glass windows. Or you may not, just like a memory the image isn’t clear,
but rather complied of various elements that both make up and trigger certain
memories.
What was your summer like when you were little?! No school?! Fun
times?! Summer time memories are some of the most beautiful. Your senses are
fully engaged as you feel the cool pool against your warm skin, listen to the
quacking of the ducks and chirping of the birds, taste fresh squeezed lemonade
sweet to the tongue, smell the aroma of burgers and hot dogs on the grill.
Your first visits to the doctor can be the scariest. As you sit
and wait your heart beats quick in fear of what’s to come. Will you get a shot?!
Once in the patient’s room, you hear the crinkling of the paper underneath you
on the bed and stare at the door waiting for the doctor. When the doctor arrives
you feel the cool metal of that funny looking thing he puts in his ears and then
places the other end near your heart. You taste the wood of the tongue dispenser
he puts in your mouth. Oh, and not that shot! You feel the sting of the needle
piercing your skin! This image can relate to so many individuals memories, so
much so that this image was altered and created based upon other people's images. I did simple image searches in Google. The searches directed me to the images found within the links below…

Who could resist a birthday party? When you’re little there is
so much fun involved with birthday parties. Remember tasting that delicious
birthday cake with sprinkles, hearing all the kids singing the “Happy Birthday”
song, smelling the burning birthday candles, seeing the table of wrapped gifts,
or playing with the colorful balloons? This image can relate to so
many individuals memories, so much so that this image was altered and created

Going to a funeral can be a very tragic and devastating experience. As you are surrounded with people in black clothing, the only thing that fills the often penetrating silence is hearing the weeping of others. You taste the saltiness of your own tears, and feel the dry tissue against your skin. You can smell the flower arrangements fused with the staleness of a funeral home. Our first romance sticks to us like glue. Being close to someone for the first time engages our sensory to a new level, making it a prominent role in our memories. You can remember feeling your hand getting sweaty as you hold hands together, the way their fragrance smelled at their neck and shirt, the way that first kiss tasted, staring into their eyes, and hearing them whisper sweet compliments in your ear. Cold winters often stir up delightful memories because of the excitement of Christmas time. You remember feeling the chilly snow as it falls all around, smelling the burning fireplace, tasting the rich hot chocolate with marshmallows, seeing the beautiful lite Christmas tree, and hearing the carolers. Fall is my favorite season! I can remember growing up excited for Halloween and festivals. You can almost hear the crunching of leaves as you jump in them, smell that hot apple cider, taste the candy corn, feel the pumpkins, and see football playing on the TV. What was the first movie you ever saw in the theaters? Although some may or may not remember, most people can remember the experience of going to the theaters. You would smell the popcorn, taste the soda, see the huge screen, hear the loud speakers, and feel the cloth of the theater seats.
